Getting Around New York City Bus Stations

There are two major ground transportation centersin Manhattan: the main one, Port Authority Bus Terminal, is in Midtown Manhattan, near Times Square; the other, the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, is uptown, near the George Washington Bridge. Both have multiple information desks providing assistance for travelers on their main floors.

Port Authority

The Port Authority Bus Terminal 635 Eighth Avenue (40th–42nd Streets), NYC 10018, 212/564-8484. As thelargest bus terminal in the US, and a western anchor of Times Square, Port Authority serves more than 200,000 passengers a day. Approximately 24 bus lines connect Port Authority with several points within the United States, Canada and Mexico. Some of the terminal’s carriers provide service to LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy, and Newark International Airports. There’s also service to Nevada and New Jersey casinos, Aqueduct racing tracks, the Meadowlands Sports Complex and Continental Airlines arena (a major sports and entertainment venue), and a host of other recreational facilities. Port Authority has parking for more than 1,000 cars in a three-story superstructure above the terminal roof, a post office, ATM machines, restaurants, and a bowling alley. Direct underground passageways connect the terminal with the A, C, E, N, R, S, 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9 subway lines.

George Washington Bridge Bus Station

George Washington Bridge Bus Station 4211 Broadway (between 178th and 179th Streets), NYC 10033 800/221-9903 Visitors arriving from Bergen County, New Jersey and Rockland County, New York, may commute to and from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, in the Washington Heights–area of upper Manhattan.: Bus connections to LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International and Kennedy International Airports are also available at the station. The station houses a bank, barbershop and beauty salon, retail stores, restaurants, newsstands, dentist, optician, bookstore, pharmacy, and a Traveler Information Kiosk. The terminal connects with the A subway line at the 175th Street subway station.
