Dinkel's history reads like a storybook; the bakery was founded in 1922 by Joseph Dinkel, one of a long line of master bakers in his native Dinkelsbuhl in Bavaria. The European bent beats on in this Lakeview shop, as do the original recipes, including one for Dinkel’s famous stollen. The Old World formula includes a mix of toasted cashews, almonds, pineapple and golden raisins, all dipped in rum and brandy before baking. For a slightly different taste, try the cinnamon stollen. Strudels are another no-fail choice; choose from varieties like poppyseed, cherry cheese and almond and apricot. More

While parents aim to instill a love of fruits and veggies in their little ones, most kids still hide peas beneath their plates. For picky tots, their exasperated parents and anyone else who could use a refresher course on the fun of carrots, local mom, entrepreneur and foodie Elena Marre built The Kids' Table, a cooking school bent on moving little fingers beyond Easy Mac and Wonder Bread.

In cooking courses, which change weekly, kids of different ages learn appropriate lessons about where food comes from, how to prepare it and what it can do for their bodies. They then take their new knowledge to a kid-sized kitchen lab, where they create meals they're stoked to feast on. Classes, like Dynamite Dips and Mexican Munchies, are geared toward groups of two- to three-year-olds, four- to six-year-olds or seven- to 10-year-olds (parental attendance is mandatory for the youngest set and optional for the middle group, but older kids can come on their own).

At the front of the bright, lofty storefront space is The Kids' Table store, where shoppers can find cookbooks for both kids and adults. They can also stock up on child-size cooking equipment, aprons, lunch boxes and other goodies for budding Trotters and Baylesses.

Think sounding out the name is hard? Try picking out a tea. TeaGschwender manages to raise teatime to an intellectual activity: Everywhere you look in the small, tranquil shop you'll find tea with lofty-sounding properties and impossible-to-pronounce names. Selecting your perfect brew means sifting through leaves of Ayurveda, Rooibush, Mate and SchwuppTeaWupp (turns out the latter just is an instant tea with a sweet, creamy flavor. But saying it in German is just too much fun.)

TeaGschwender offers teapots of glass and porcelain as well as teapot warmers, tea warming candles and candy sugar. For an on-the-go treat (there's no seating), try the $3.50 teapuccinno, a sweet, spicy alternative to your Starbucks standby.
